2nd Story added such depth and breadth of conversation to our new associate orientation. The group was able to connect with each other and concepts of empathy across differences in such a refreshing way. We are excited to continue to partner with 2nd Story.

Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion

CultureBuilds creates spaces where new and long-term colleagues share their personal experiences that gives insight into their world view. Through storytelling, participants practice listening to a differing viewpoint, allowing all to carefully evaluate their own perspective. These workshops put psychological safety at the top of storytelling learning, and by doing so, give participants an immediate way to model safe discussion and empathetic responses.

Our approach focuses on developing a sense of understanding and safety amongst colleagues. We create spaces where people who have been colleagues for years or are just joining the team have an opportunity to listen and share with one another about the experiences that color their understanding of the world.

Building upon the storytelling expertise of our parent organization, we collaborate with our partners to identify the type of conversation their organization needs to have. In a CultureBuilds session, participants practice hearing another person’s point of view and evaluating their own. Blending performances of professionally crafted, real-life, first-person narrative with facilitated conversations, CultureBuilds provides participants with opportunities to empathize with their own experiences and the experiences of their colleagues.

Increased empathy is how transformation begins. If you’re interested in helping your team go beyond the letter of EDI rules please connect with us to discuss how we can support you in that work.

Potential Offerings

ANTI-RACISM OR RACIAL LITERACY LEARNING SERIES

CultureBuilds will work with your team to develop an Anti-Racism Learning Plan that suits your team. An Anti-Racism Learning Plan involves either a single or series of workshops that identifies such key concepts as Implicit Bias, Micro and Macro Aggressions, White Fragility, and Radical Self-Care.

Respect and Harassment Learning Sessions

Bolster your team’s understanding of how respect and dignity of coworkers creates a safer workplace, and an environment where actions cannot be misconstrued as harmless teasing, or appropriate interactions.

LGBTQAI+ Learning Sessions

Gender and identity are not new realities for your team, but the public discussion around gender and identity are now thankfully encouraged to provide individuals with safe involvement with the broader society. CultureBuilds workshops can help your team support the LGBTQ community’s work to safeguard an individual’s ability to be their authentic self in the workplace.

SUPPORTING AFFINITY GROUPS

CultureBuilds can support your company’s affinity groups through individual and integrated workshops where each group can openly discuss the issues that affect their work lives. From here, affinity groups may find they can develop better advocacy for organizational change, use the group’s strength for more effective networking, and learn how to connect to new associations.

Past Partners

“Everyone in the world is culturally dunking on one another over right and wrong instead of listening, first and foremost, before engaging in conversation. CultureBuilds is the solution to this issue. Our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion experience with CultureBuilds so beautifully provided our staff a space to listen, engage, and reflect—we wanted to help create that same experience for the general public, it is something the world so deeply needs right now.”
— Kyle Evangelista, President & Group Publisher at Guerrero Media, Chicago, IL
Overall, we learned that relationships are foundational to diversity discussions. Championing the personal narratives of others, even if we don’t fully understand them or haven’t experienced them ourselves, is key to building an inclusive culture.
— D.L. Morriss, Diversity & Inclusion Partner at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, Chicago, IL
I came into the experience with my knives out. I had read a lot about seminars that seemed to do more to make people feel isolated and alone rather than harbor understanding and connection. I came into this with my arms crossed and my eyes ready to roll. That wasn’t what I experienced at all. I wound up being grateful for this time together and for the compassion that was displayed by the CultureBuilds team.
